Apparel Lingo 101
Why This Page Exists
TeeStitch Apparel was founded on the belief that sustainability and style should go hand in hand. Our founder, EL Hudson, realized firsthand how easy it is to shop based on looks alone—only to end up with garments that don’t meet comfort, durability, or quality expectations.
Frustrated with inconsistent fabrics and lack of transparency in clothing descriptions, EL wanted to create a space where customers could truly understand what goes into their garments. Apparel Lingo 101 was designed to offer a clear, no-BS guide to our apparel's fabric, construction, and design details so you can compare products, spot quality differences, and make informed purchasing decisions.
Whether you’re looking for softness, durability, or sustainability, this guide gives you the knowledge to shop smarter, ensuring that your clothes not only look great—but feel great and last longer, too.
Fabric Terms & Definitions
Below, you’ll find a breakdown of key fabric terms, materials, and construction methods used in our products. Each definition includes why it matters and how it affects quality, durability, and sustainability.
3-End Fleece
A premium fleece construction using three separate yarns to create a thicker, more durable, and high-quality fabric compared to 2-end fleece. This method improves structure and longevity, making it a go-to for hoodies and sweatshirts.
100% Organic Cotton Face
The outermost surface of the fabric that you see and touch is made entirely of organic cotton. This provides a soft, natural feel while maintaining eco-friendliness, as organic cotton is grown without harmful pesticides or synthetic fertilizers.
Ring-Spun Cotton
A process where cotton fibers are spun in a way that makes the fabric smoother, softer, and stronger than regular cotton. It results in a higher-quality, longer-lasting material.
Combed Cotton
A refining process that removes impurities and shorter fibers from cotton, leaving behind only the longest, strongest, and softest fibers. This makes for an even more durable and luxurious fabric.
Brushed Fabric
The inner surface of the fabric is "brushed" to create a fleece-like texture that is ultra-soft and comfortable against the skin. This technique enhances warmth and coziness.
Recycled Polyester
Polyester made from repurposed materials like plastic bottles, reducing waste and the need for virgin polyester production. While recycled polyester is a more sustainable alternative, mindful washing can help minimize microplastic shedding.
Construction & Design Features
Top Yarn 28 Single
Refers to the yarn thickness and quality. A 28 single (28s) yarn means a finer, more tightly spun thread, resulting in a softer, smoother, and more lightweight fabric. Higher single numbers indicate finer quality.
24 Single Yarn
A 24 single (24s) yarn is slightly thicker than 28s, offering a balance between softness and durability while maintaining a lightweight feel.
Set-In Sleeve
A sleeve style where the sleeve is sewn into the armhole (shoulder seam), creating a structured and tailored fit. This design is commonly found in high-quality tees and hoodies for a clean, polished look.
Side-Seamed Construction
Side seams run along the sides of the garment, providing a more tailored and structured fit compared to tubular construction. It enhances durability and shape retention.
1x1 Rib Knit
A type of ribbing used at collars, cuffs, and hems to provide stretch and recovery while maintaining a clean, fitted look. Often used in sweatshirts and tees for added durability.
Premium YKK Zippers
High-quality, durable zippers that are smooth, reliable, and long-lasting—commonly found in jackets and hoodies.
Rib-Knit Banding at Collar, Cuffs, and Hem
Provides stretch and structure while ensuring a snug fit, often used in bomber jackets and sweatshirts.
Unisex & Relaxed Fit
Many of our garments feature a unisex fit, designed to be comfortable for a wide range of body types while maintaining a modern, relaxed silhouette.
